sun.flow.er \-. flau.(-*)r\ n : any of a genus ( Helianthus) of composite plants with large yellow-rayed flower heads bearing seeds that serve as stock food and yield an edible oil.

In August, 1888 Vincent Van Gogh began painting a series of works known as the sunflowers.   These paintings are his best known work.

SUNFLOWER FACTS

The scientific name of sunflowers is Helianthus, Helia for sun and Anthus for flower.

The sunflower is the national flower of Russia.

The tallest sunflower ever grown was 25' 5.5" by M. Heijmf in the Netherlands.

Sunflower stems were used to fill lifejackets before the advent of modern materials.

The sunflower is not one flower, but a cluster of more then 2000 tiny flowers growing together!

There are 67 species of sunflowers, growing in the USA, Europe, Japan, and Russia.

A sunflower's head can grow to be as big as 2 feet across and the plant itself can be as tall as 18 feet.
